DANGEROUS TO MAN

The Southern Death Adder is found in the hills and foothills, and is common around the Canning Dam.

This short, sturdy snake has colours which vary from greyish-brown to reddish-brown with pale cross-bands. It has a definite head and a dark worm-like lure at the end of the tail.

Juveniles are more brightly coloured than adults; 12-16cm when born and grow to about 60-70cm.

As a rule, the Death Adder is not generally aggressive, they will only bite if trodden on and for this reason great care needs to be taken when bushwalking. They are usually slow and sluggish but can strike with explosive speed if hungry.
