The month of December proved to be extremely busy for the Reptile Centre, with rescues, births and unfortunately deaths.
We were called out to assist in releasing a kangaroo caught up in a barbed wire fence. After lots of struggling with the cutting of the wire the kangaroo was successfully released, and after about 15 minutes of resting it moved back towards the forest where it rejoined its mob.
The start of summer brought with it heat and numerous venomous snake rescues. Some snakes were found inside houses, aviaries and, of course, chook pens – plus a visitor to the Centre on Christmas Day; only the second time in 15 years! Animal rescues are not always successful, which was displayed when 2 Dugites (venomous snakes) had to be euthanased after being beaten by members of the public; so severely that the snakes’ backs were broken. Several Bobtail Skinks were brought into the Centre after being attacked by family dogs. However, injuries proved too severe and it was a kinder fate to euthanase them. 2 other Kangaroos were found with broken legs and back. These were taken to the local veterinarian who made the decision to have the animals put down.
The Woma Python has been successfully bred, with 18 eggs being laid and the first of these hatching on Christmas Day. This has proved to offer great excitement to staff members as it is the first time the Woma Python has laid, and hatched, eggs at the Centre.
The 2nd of December brought about much dismay when some of our beloved animals were stolen by 8 European visitors. 3 female and 5 male persons tried to taken one of the pythons, but were disturbed by staff members before they managed to do so. 3 lizards were recovered from a woman’s bag; however they did manage to get away with 10 of our smaller skinks and 2 of the Bobtails.
It is very disheartening to have this type of incident occurring by persons from overseas as we openly welcome visitors from around the world to our Centre. |
