Carpet Python – Morelia spilota This large snake has a triangular head distinct from its neck, vertical pupils and heat-sensitive pits in the lips to detect warm-blooded prey. Colouring varies from pale to dark brown with blackish blotches, sometimes with cross-bands. Carpet pythons shelter in hollow trunks and limbs, disused burrows, caves, rock crevices and beneath boulders. Females breed in spring every 2-3 years producing a clutch of 7-54 eggs. After mating the female will fast and warm her belly in the sun. Hatchlings are about 35cm and can grow to 4m in length. |
